Everything I Learned About Pineapples This Week

I never really thought much about pineapples until this week, and now I can't stop thinking about them.

They take forever to grow​

A pineapple plant takes about 18 to 24 months to actually produce a single fruit. That's almost two years of waiting for one pineapple. Meanwhile I get impatient waiting for toast.

Each one is actually made of many little fruits​

A pineapple isn't one single fruit. It's actually dozens of individual berries that fused together around a central core. Every one of those little "eyes" on the outside used to be its own flower.

They don't ripen after being picked​

Unlike bananas or avocados, pineapples stop ripening the moment they're cut from the plant. So that slightly underripe one at the store is staying exactly that underripe forever. Pick wisely.

Small fact-finding missions like this are honestly one of my favorite ways to take a break from coding for twenty minutes. If you know any more pineapple facts, I'd love to hear them.
